Accident Near King-Pierce County Line Causes 7-Mile Backup
8/31/2007

A seven-vehicle accident near the King-Pierce county line resulted in a seven-mile traffic backup as all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed for over five hours. The accident was the result of a southbound car that swerved, rolled, and jumped the median into oncoming traffic. A passenger in the northbound car - a 14-year old boy - sustained life-threatening head injuries. Six other were injured less seriously.

Reports indicate that the 14-year old boy was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Under Washington law failure to wear a seatbelt cannot be introduced into evidence and does not diminish the injured person's right to recover money damages.
